A teenager from Caister-on-Sea near Great Yarmouth received burns to his face and eye after an accident at work.
Jack Amey was just 17 at the time of the accident which occurred at Moughton Engineering’s factory in October 2010. The burns occurred after Mr Amey was told to use a highly toxic substance call ‘pickling paste’ to remove some welding stains from stainless steel. He was left unsupervised and dropped the container which then splashed in his face.
The Health and Safety Executive, prosecuting, told Great Yarmouth’s Magistrates Court that Mr Amey was unaware of how hazardous the chemical is and that no safety systems were in place. This was spotted by management, which stopped its use but failed to ensure it was removed from site. This paste was subsequently given to the teenager to use by an older member of staff who was unaware of the ban.
Moughton Engineering, of Faraday Road, Great Yarmouth, pleaded guilty to breaching section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and were fined £6,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,846.80.
